Prof. Dr. Selahattin Özmen graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1995 with the third degree. In the same year, he started his assistantship at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Clinic and received the title of specialist (operator doctor) in 2002. Continuing his career in the same clinic, Dr Özmen obtained the titles of Assistant Professor in 2004, Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2013.
In 2013, Prof. Dr. Özmen, who received the diplomas of Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist and Hand Surgery and Microsurgery Specialist, has achieved significant success in the field of plastic surgery. With a TÜBİTAK scholarship, he worked with Dr. Maria Siemionow at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the United States of America in 2002-2003 on advanced microsurgery, stem cells, experimental face and limb transplants, ischemia-reperfusion injury and quantitative somatosensory testing in diabetic patients. He won six international awards for these studies.
In 2004, he won the European Plastic Surgery Society (EURAPS) Young Scholarship Award and worked in the field of craniofacial surgery at Sahlgrenska Akademin in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2006, he received the first prize in the Experimental branch of the Plastic Surgery Education Foundation (PSEF), a prestigious award in the United States of America, and became one of the few people from Turkey to win this award. In 2007, he received the International Wound Care Specialist (Certified Wound Expert ICW) certificate in Germany with the first prize and specialised in modern wound care and products.
Prof. Dr. Özmen, who has a total of twenty awards, eight of which are international, has been an international trainer of AO CMF (Craniomaxillofacial Surgery) on facial fractures and orthognathic surgery since 2011. In 2012, he successfully performed Turkey's third face transplant, the first female-to-female and bony face transplant at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Ministry of Health Tissue Transplantation Scientific Committee.
Since 2013, Prof. Dr. Selahattin Özmen, who has been working in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the American Hospital, was appointed as the first head of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at Koç University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, which officially became the Department on 1 October 2018, and he still continues to serve in this position. Known for his vast experience and international achievements in the field of plastic surgery, Prof. Dr. Özmen continues to make significant contributions in both clinical and academic fields.
