Ocular oncology is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in and around the eye. The physicians specialized in this field diagnose the cancers in or around the eye and perform appropriate treatment methods. Ocular Oncology concerns with the cancers that can occur in any part of the eye. The most common ocular cancers include retinoblastoma, choroidal melanoma, conjunctival cancers and eyelid cancers. What Is Ocular Oncology?
Ocular oncology is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in and around the eye. The physicians specialized in this field diagnose the cancers in or around the eye and perform appropriate treatment methods. Ocular Oncology concerns with the cancers that can occur in any part of the eye. The most common ocular cancers include retinoblastoma, choroidal melanoma, conjunctival cancers and eyelid cancers. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important for these cancers. Because they can damage the eye structure and visual function as well as spread to other parts of the body.
Ocular oncologists use a variety of imaging techniques to diagnose cancerous lesions. These include ophthalmoscopy, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). In addition, the final diagnosis is made with the microscopic analysis of the tissue taken with biopsy procedure from the eye tumor. Treatment methods vary depending on the type of cancer, its size, extent of spread and overall health condition of the patient. Ocular oncologists may use some methods such as surgery, laser therapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The treatment plan is personalized based on needs of the patient and characteristics of the cancer.
Ocular oncology, in this regard, requires a multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, ocular oncologists often collaborate with ophthalmologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and pathologists. Many cases of ocular cancer can be successfully managed and quality of vision and life can be improved with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
