Gastric Band (Stomach Band) Surgery

Gastric banding is a procedure used in obesity surgery, also known as the 'gastric band' procedure. In this method, a band (or belt) is placed around the stomach to constrict it and control food intake.

What Is Gastric Band (Stomach Band)?

Gastric band, known as "stomach band," is a procedure used in obesity surgery. In this method, a band (belt) is placed around the stomach to narrow it and control food intake.

The gastric band procedure uses laparoscopic surgical technique. This is a minimally invasive method and is performed under general anesthesia. During the surgery, a silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a ring that goes around it. This ring divides the stomach into two parts and turns the upper part into a smaller tube. The band applies pressure to the stomach, allowing for slower food intake and a longer feeling of fullness.

The gastric band is an adjustable system. It has a reservoir on the band, and its tightness can be adjusted by injecting fluid. The tightness of the band can be customized based on an individual's weight loss goals and needs.

Gastric band surgery supports weight loss and restricts food intake. It leads to a feeling of fullness with smaller meal portions, which promotes the weight loss process. Additionally, gastric banding is a reversible procedure. The band can be removed or adjusted as needed.

How Is Gastric Band (Stomach Band) Surgery Performed?

Gastric band surgery is typically performed using a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopic surgery. Here are the steps of gastric band surgery:

  • Anesthesia: The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring the patient is asleep and does not feel pain. Incisions: The surgical team usually makes several small incisions (approximately 1-2 cm) in the abdominal area. These incisions are used to provide access for laparoscopic surgical instruments and a camera.
  • Placement of Trocars: Thin tubes called laparoscopic trocars are inserted through the incisions. These tubes allow the placement of surgical instruments and the camera inside the abdomen.
  • Placement of Gastric Band: Through the laparoscopic camera, access is gained to the stomach. A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach and adjusted to tighten it. The band divides the stomach into two parts, turning the upper part into a smaller tube.
  • Adjustment of the Band: The gastric band is an adjustable system. During the surgery, the tightness of the band is determined based on the patient's needs and weight loss goals. The tightness of the band can be adjusted postoperatively with fluid injection from a reservoir.
  • Closure of Incisions: Once the surgery is completed, the laparoscopic instruments are removed, and the incisions are usually closed with stitches or special tape.
  • Post-Surgery Period: Patients must follow a specific diet plan and attend recommended follow-up appointments with the surgical team. The tightness of the band can be adjusted over time or as needed.

Gastric band surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Due to its minimally invasive nature, the recovery period is generally faster, and postoperative pain is lessened.

Gastric band surgery is evaluated and decided upon by the obesity surgery team for suitable patients. The success rate of the surgery depends on the patient's level of compliance, dietary and lifestyle changes."

What Are the Possible Complications of Gastric Band (Stomach Band) Surgery?

Gastric band (stomach band) surgery generally carries lower risks compared to other obesity surgery procedures. However, as with any surgical procedure, some complications can occur. Possible complications of gastric band surgery may include:

  • Band Slippage: Displacement of the band can result in improper positioning over the stomach or issues with stomach division. This can reduce the effectiveness of weight loss and impact the success of the surgery.
  • Band Erosion: There is a risk of band erosion in which the band may erode into the stomach lining. This can lead to complications, and removal of the band may be necessary.
  • Band Obstruction: An obstruction can occur within the band, preventing food from passing through. This may result in symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, and food blockage, requiring intervention.
  • Gastric Ulcers: In some cases, gastric banding may increase the risk of stomach ulcers. This can cause irritation and damage to the inner stomach lining, leading to symptoms like stomach pain, bleeding, or other complications.
  • Reflux and Heartburn: Gastric banding can exacerbate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in some patients, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and discomfort.
  • Infection: Like all surgical procedures, gastric band surgery carries a risk of infection at the surgical site. Infections may require treatment.
  • Reduced Nutrient Absorption: Gastric banding may, in some cases, reduce nutrient absorption, potentially leading to vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

While these complications are rare, careful postoperative follow-up and compliance are essential for patients. Preoperative and postoperative education can help reduce the risk of complications.
