Treatment Methods in Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery involves a series of surgical treatment methods to encourage weight loss and reduce obesity-associated health problems in overweight and obese individuals. Some of the treatment methods commonly practiced in the bariatric surgery are as follows:

Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgeries:

  • Sleeve gastrectomy: A large portion of the stomach is removed and a tube-like shape is given to the stomach. In this way, volume of the stomach is reduced and patients will be able to consume less food.
  • Gastric Bypass Surgeries: A portion of the stomach is cut and directly connected with the intestine. In this method, food advances in body, partially bypassing the digestive system. So, the foods effect the digestion less, bypassing the intestinal system, which results in less calorie intake.

Malabsorptive Bariatric Surgeries:

  • Biliopancreatic Diversion: It reduces absorption of food with sleeve gastrectomy and bypassing procedures.
  • Duodenal Switch: It reduces absorption of food with sleeve gastrectomy and bypassing procedures.

Adjustable Gastric Band (Lap Band):

A band is used in this method, which is placed in upper portion of the stomach. This particular band divides the stomach into two sections, aiming to control food intake. The band can be tightened or loosened if needed.

These bariatric surgery methods are generally performed in individuals with obesity-associated health problems and history of insufficient weight loss outcomes from other methods. The surgeries allow to reduce volume of the stomach as well as limits food absorption for encouragement of weight loss or fulfill the both. However, the bariatric surgery is a critical procedure and may not be suitable for each individual. Thus, it is important to take notice of particular conditions of the patients with evaluation and recommendation of a surgeon.
