What Is Perineoplasty?

Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure that deals with shape irregularities, damages, and defects in a woman's anal and vaginal area. This operation aims to correct scar tissues, eliminate undesirable bulges, and remove unwanted skin tissue. Additionally, it involves tightening or loosening the perineal muscles and the vagina.

Another benefit of perineoplasty, along with these corrections, is helping women regain their self-confidence and potentially enhancing their physical levels of sexual satisfaction. This can lead to improved self-esteem and positive changes in their sexual lives.

How Is Perineoplasty Done?

Perineoplasty is typically an outpatient treatment that lasts about one hour and is performed under general or local anesthesia. Hospitalization is rarely required.

During the surgery, a 'V'-shaped incision is made on the posterior vaginal wall. Scar tissue, protrusions, and other damages are addressed. Muscles are tightened or loosened as needed to resolve the issue, and then carefully stitched. After a brief recovery period, the patient is allowed to go home.

During the post-operative recovery period of perineoplasty, patients should avoid sexual intercourse for about six weeks. It is also recommended to abstain from strenuous activities such as biking, horseback riding, heavy lifting, or stretching during this time. Tampon use should be avoided. Most patients can return to work within a few days.

Pain and discomfort are typically mild to moderate and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or medications prescribed by the doctor. Minor bleeding and some discharge are normal.

Symptoms such as dizziness or nausea due to anesthesia may last for one or two days but usually subside after forty-eight hours.

The incision area should be kept clean and dry. Stitches typically dissolve on their own within about two weeks. To prevent constipation during this period, it is important to drink plenty of water and increase fiber intake.
