Following and treating oral and dental health of the children, the Pedodontics is also a branch of dentistry involving protective measures. The pediatric dentists carry out treatments for oral and dental health of children between period of infancy and young adulthood.
The Pediatric Dentistry helps children form oral and dental health habits and prevents them from tooth decay, dental traumas and other oral problems. The pediatric dentists provide training with children for regular dental checkup, oral hygiene and toothbrushing techniques. They also perform tooth decay treatments, fissure sealant applications, fillings, dental prostheses and tooth extraction. The Pediatric Dentistry also involves treatments aiming to reduce dentist phobia and anxiety in children. The pediatric dentists use specific communication and behavior techniques to comfort and assure the children. They also adopt educational and motivational approaches that can positively effect dental health habits of the children.
Among the treatment and applications performed as part of the Pedodontics, there are oral-dental care, nutritional recommendations, dental prostheses, tooth extraction, protective applications for tooth decay (fluoride gel, fluoride varnish, fissure sealant), treatment of dental traumas, endodontic treatments (root canal treatments, amputations), treatment of bad oral habits (thumbsucking, nail biting, lip biting etc.), restorative treatments for milk teeth and adult teeth (filling) and space maintainers. Milk teeth play an important role in allowing children to properly nourish and supporting the proper development of speech. The milk teeth also lead and protect the adult teeth that will replace them. Thus, early extraction of the milk teeth can negatively affect the proper location of the adult teeth. It aims to take protective measures for prevention of dental problems and guidance to a decay-free future. Preventive dentistry applications cover training of children and their families about oral-dental health and nutrition. Superficial fluoride application and fissure sealants can be listed among these applications. The fissure sealants close the fissures of adult teeth tending to decay and prevent decay development. Fluoride application, on the other hand, strengthens the teeth and prevents decay development.
Being a specialization in protection and treatment of dental health, it plays a vital role for children to have a healthier dentition. Regular dental checkups that start in early childhood form a basis for healthy dental development and long-term oral health of the children.
