Bariatric Surgery Diet Program Guide

The three most important points to be followed in the bariatric surgery diet program are to use regular minerals and vitamins, to ensure adequate fluid and protein intake. Apart from these, the main points of nutrition in bariatric surgery are as follows:

  • 6-8 glasses of liquid consumption per day
  • Drinks should be drunk slowly and sip by sip
  • Pipette should not be used as it may cause swallowing of air
  • Meals should be eaten slowly and nutrition should be terminated when signs of satiety are felt
  • Prioritize the consumption of protein products at meals
  • The bariatric diet should be adjusted according to tolerance in line with your eating habits

Pre Bariatric Surgery Diet

Dieting before obesity surgery facilitates surgery by reducing liver volume, reduces the risk of complications and helps the postoperative recovery period. According to research, it helps people who start to lose weight with a diet before obesity surgery to adapt easily to the process and feel psychologically prepared. For this reason, people are subjected to bariatric dietitian follow-up before surgery.

What is the General Diet Progression After Bariatric Surgery?

The nutritional program after bariatric surgery is done in stages. The reason why the bariatric diet is done in stages is to allow the stomach and body to adjust to the process in harmony during the recovery period. The stages of bariatric surgery diet are as follows:

  1. Transparent liquid diet (in hospital)
  2. All liquid diet (2 weeks)
  3. Puree diet (2 weeks)
  4. Soft diet (2 weeks)
  5. Regular diet

Bariatric Diet After Surgery

Transparent Liquid Diet

After bariatric surgery, a clear liquid diet is administered in hospital. The clear liquid diet is only given in the hospital after surgery under the supervision of the surgeon. Drink 30 ml of water, freshly squeezed grape juice, unsweetened warm tea and freshly squeezed apple juice every hour. If 30 ml does not upset the stomach, up to 60 ml of liquid can be consumed.

All Liquid Diet

An all-liquid diet is followed for the first 2 weeks after hospital discharge. Liquids should be consumed slowly to prevent nausea during the bariatric surgery liquid diet. 60 ml of fluid consumption can be taken with a protein shake. The liquid content should be caffeine-free, sugar-free and low-energy. Vitamins and minerals should be taken completely during the obesity diet process.

Puree Diet

Puree diet is applied in the 3rd and 4th weeks after bariatric surgery. In this process, after the liquid diet, a transition is made to light viscous foods. A solid diet should never be applied without a puree diet. Food should have the consistency of baby food, 6-8 glasses of water should be drunk daily and at least 60 g of protein should be consumed.

Soft Diet

The soft diet is administered at 5 to 6 weeks after bariariatric surgery. If there is no tolerance problem against the pureed diet, a transition to a soft diet is made. Foods eaten for the first time should be consumed alone. In this way, the body's reaction to the food can be seen. It is important to eat meals with portion control.

Regular Diet

A regular diet is started as of the 7th week after bariatric surgery. The amount of calories to be taken daily in the personalized diet prepared is 800 - 1200 calories. Foods should be consumed in 5-6 meals daily, including 3 main meals and 2-3 high protein snacks. The bariatric diet should be applied completely as prepared by the expert dietitian and daily adequate fluid consumption and mineral supplementation should be emphasized.
